The CAA meets the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ)
Meeting DESNZ to talk climate policy
In July 2023, the CAA had the incredible opportunity to meet our UK government to help influence climate policy.
We met with the deputy director for Net Zero, and the wider team in the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero. We are hoping to support their policymaking with data-driven insights from our work with clients.
In person representatives included Emilien Hoet from ClimatePartner, Andrew Griffiths from Planet Mark, Emma Littlewood from Green Element and Maggie Buggie from Normative.io.
We are technically competitors, but we prefer to ourselves as allies in fighting the climate crisis and making Net Zero a reality.
The meeting came about, as last year, Andrew Griffiths and Emilien Hoet co-founded the Carbon Accounting Alliance.
The goal was to bring companies involved in measuring carbon footprints - both software and consultancies - together so that we could share learnings and collaborate.
We tell our clients to collaborate in their industries, so it only felt right to make sure we were also walking the talk. It's collaboration, not competition, that will solve the climate crisis.
Recommendations included:
Setting a timeline and deadline for when all businesses will be required to report at least Scope 1 & 2 emissions on an annual basis.
Making it mandatory for commercial landlords to share energy, water and waste data with tenants (for Scope 1 & 2, and some 3 measurement).
Improving access, quality and quantity of green skills education and training to fill crucial skills gaps for carbon emissions measurement, reductions and strategy.
Leading a nationwide education and awareness programme for businesses and public to reframe net zero, making it approachable and achievable, while communicating the business benefits in the process.
We look forward to our continued exchange with the UK’s policymakers.
