Collaboration, not competition, will solve this climate crisis.

We founded the Carbon Accounting Alliance as a place for alignment and collaboration in the carbon accounting industry. In the ethos of “collaboration over competition” we believe that our industry working together is critical for us to collectively solve the climate crisis.

Currently, there isn’t a recognised industry association to facilitate conversations between organisations and individuals measuring and reporting on GHG emissions. Despite important strides forward in standardising approaches for measuring GHG emissions, we recognise that the GHG Protocol, ISO and PAS Standards still leave lots of room for interpretation when it comes to certain methodologies, rules and emission factor database choices.

The Alliance shares challenges and learnings in an open, vulnerable forum, so we can all move faster with collective intelligence.

We identify common barriers affecting carbon accounting and leverage our collective voice to drive policy change that can remove barriers to measurement and maximise opportunities for industry.

We embody values of respect and openness to help accelerate the transition to a fairer, kinder and regenerative world.

Our objectives

  • To develop practical guidance and consistent interpretation of the standards. The output will be a dynamic online wiki which includes relevant output from working groups.

  • To develop and drive adoption of the first professional qualification for carbon accounting in collaboration with industry bodies.

  • To ensure policy & standards development is ambitious, fit for purpose and considers the industry's point of view.

About the co-founders

In 2022, we shared our frustrations about the carbon accounting industry with each other: how everyone was interpreting the standards differently, how there was a lack of consistency, little to no professional qualifications and how innovation in the space was too slow moving.

On top of that, we were tired of telling clients that industry collaboration was key to enabling large-scale decarbonisation, whilst our industry wasn’t walking the talk.

A simple conversation called turned into action when we invited a few people in our network to join a monthly call where we would exchange ideas and best practice. Turns out, we weren’t the only ones to have had this idea!

We went from an information movement to an official organisation in November 2023 when we launched publicly. Founding the CAA was the solution to our frustration, and we are delighted to see that our message continues to resonate with so many others.

  • Alongside being the co-Founder of the CAA, Andrew is the Director of Policy and Corporate Development at PlanetMark.

He wears a few other hats including being an IoD council member and advisory board member for several organisations.

He is passionate about building sustainable communities, forging partnerships, simplifying carbon jargon and pushing for supportive climate policy.

  • Labelled as a "climate wonk" by Politico, Emilien spends most of his time obsessing on how we make global Net Zero a reality.

As a co-founder of the Carbon Accounting Alliance he tries to inspire a sense of urgency and collaboration to solve the climate crisis.

Until recently he was the Managing Director of ClimatePartner UK, an end-to-end solution provider for climate action.
